- Fly Line
"A well-stocked tackle shop
offers a bewildering assortment of fly lines. They come in different weights,
different tapers and a selection of colors. Some float, some sink, and
some do a little of each. But choosing the right lines for various situations
need not be difficult. Your decision depends mainly on the size of your
fly, how far you want to cast it, and how deep you want it to sink. Other
factors that may influence your selection include the wariness of the trout,
whether the surface is smooth or broken, and the amount of wind.
Most fly lines are 80 to 100 feet long, consisting of a core of braided
nylon or Dacron with a plastic coating. The plastic may be impregnated
with air bubbles or lead powder to make it float or sink, and it may vary
in thickness so the line tapers."
